Greetings from the Hotel de Campo.

Our company has been working in the hotel industry for 10 years and offering lodging in Playa Sámara in Guanacaste province.  Since 2001 we ahd the pleasure to introduce another product:  Hotel de Campo, located at the Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, in Alajuela province.

After just few years of operation in the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, the Hotel de Campo Caño Negro, previously known as the Caño Negro Fishing Club, has remodeled and enlarged its rooms, we add a swimming pool, a whirlpool, a tropical whirlpool, as well as its nature activities.

The Hotel de Campo, is now promoting the trademark “The Original Caño Negro.”

Why, “The Original Caño Negro”?

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, one of the 4th most important wetlands in the world, is located 25 kms south of Los Chiles in the northern area of Alajuela province.  For more than a decade, and continuing to the present, unscrupulous companies have sold excursions along the length of the Frío River, in the town of Los Chiles, using the well-known name of Caño Negro, in order to lower their costs and increase profits.

Although the two areas share some similar features, there are precise ecological and geographical reasons for the location of the Caño Negro Refuge, which determine the indisputable quality of the product, and which cannot be compared to the product sold from Los Chiles.  One of the main reasons is that Caño Negro has the one and only lagoon system in the entire northern area of Costa Rica.  It has been declared a site of international importance for the nesting of migratory birds, and was officially added to the RAMSAR list in 1991.

In Novembre 2007, the National Refuge of Caño Negro has been declareted the Heart of the Internation Biological Reserve "Agua y Paz", that is part of the UNESCO spots.

It is not only unethical to misinform visitors, who for years have believed they were visiting the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, but it is not the basis of operation for a serious company.

Do not be fooled, to visit the Caño Negro Refuge, you must go to Caño Negro.

During recent years the infrastructure in the town of Caño Negro (the refuge carries the town’s name, which was derived from the name of a branch of the Frío River that borders the town) has been improved and all the basic services are now offered.  However, the majority of the printed tour guides still carry outdated information that reflects the reality that existed ten years ago.

Among the new offerings at “The Original Caño Negro,” a product that is also being promoted among international agencies, is the Safari Photography trip—a unique activity in Costa Rica.  This activity combines all the same techniques of sport hunting, but instead of weapons, video cameras are used.  This is an activity only for the adventurous who are specialized in the area of photography, video and nature.

However, as you can see in our catalogue, we continue to offer fresh-water sport fishing, an activity in which we are still leaders in Caño Negro, as well as high-quality traditional excursions to observe and identify animals, birds, butterflies and mammals.
